Ruth Fisher / Frances Conroy

Ruth è la madre di Nate, David e Claire, e si è sempre dedicata alla sua famiglia, dalla madre invalida ai figli. Da quando il marito è morto, tenta di rifarsi una vita e di evitare allo stesso tempo i forti sensi di colpa, cominciati due anni prima della scomparsa del consorte, per una relazione extraconiugale.

Frances Conroy è una delle attrici favorite di Arthur Miller, per il quale ha recitato in diverse occasioni; dopo aver studiato recitazione presso la prestigiosa Neighborhood Playhouse and Juilliard School. Ha recitato in diverse produzioni del New York Shakespeare Festival.La sua prima apparizione televisiva risale al 1987, mentre nel 1988 è comparsa per la prima volta sul grande schermo come figlia di Burt Lancaster in Rocket Gibraltar. Nel 1992 ha partecipato a Scent of a Woman, remake del film italiano Profumo di donna, con un grande Al Pacino. Nello stesso anno ha iniziato a recitare per Arthur Miller nella commedia Off Broadway The Last Yankee con un ruolo che le è valso un OBIE Award. Nel 1994 nel dramma Broken Glass e nel 1996 nel film The Crucible del quale Miller ha scritto la sceneggiatura.Nel 2001 è tornata con grande successo alla tv con il ruolo di Ruth Fisher in Six Feet Under. Per questo ruolo nel 2004 Frances Conroy si è aggiudicata il Golden Globe come migliore attrice di serie tv.
